Questions
Common Questions
Answers to the questions couples most commonly ask when planning their Islamic marriage at Leeds Grand Mosque.
For a valid Islamic Nikkah, both parties must give their free and full consent, a Mahr (dowry) must be agreed upon, and two adult Muslim male witnesses must be present. A Wali (guardian) is also required for the bride. Our scholars will guide you through each requirement at your enquiry appointment and ensure everything is properly arranged before the ceremony date.
In Islamic law, a Muslim man may marry a woman from the People of the Book (Jewish or Christian), while a Muslim woman may only marry a Muslim man. If a non-Muslim partner is considering embracing Islam, we are happy to provide guidance and support through our New to Islam programme. Please contact us to discuss your specific circumstances and our scholars will advise you accordingly.
There is a suggested voluntary contribution for the Nikkah ceremony to cover the scholar's time and the mosque's facilities. No couple will be turned away due to financial circumstances. Please discuss fees openly at your enquiry appointment and we will find a suitable arrangement. Pre-marriage guidance sessions are offered free of charge.
A minimum of two adult Muslim male witnesses are required for the Nikkah to be Islamically valid. If you do not have suitable witnesses available, please let us know at your enquiry appointment and we will do our best to assist. The mosque can also provide guidance on whether civil registration is required alongside your Islamic ceremony to ensure your marriage is recognised under UK law.
